It was 5.2 degrees Celsius when I woke this morning and sometime during the early hours the sound of hail hitting the window disturbed my sleep. It's still raining and I fear the little beetroot seedlings I planted two days ago may not have survived. I have a symposium on Percy Grainger to attend today, but since getting to the Grainger Museum involves standing in the cold and rain to catch various forms of public transport, I may alter my plans. It's 7.38 am and we've just had more hail. There are no bird calls and none to be seen. Very bleak.
