This new project is a continuation of my investigation of facial expression that I've done periodically over the past years. It was prompted recently by two events. I saw 'Moonage Daydream' the film depicting some of David Bowies music tradjectory and was impressed by the various personas he adopted during his career. I'd also watched quite by accident Billie Eilish's rendition of 'No time to die' in which an artificial light source used whilst she was singing rendered her face in partial darkness. I liked the black/white, life/death binaries.
I decided to undermine the current trend of those who use 'beauty filters' to create a more aesthetic visage. I made extreme, rather drastic modifications to my own photographic self-portraits to emphasize that in both instances the camera lies and it is pure fantasy to buy into the cutsie culture (Kawaii), which has some retreating into a world in which technologies can make you anything you want to be. A childlike retreat that engenders notions of being safe and protected, when in fact there is no safety and our mortality is guaranteed.
I'm still working through the issues, however the following images are the start.
