Oil pastel

Yesterday I began a painting that will be another version of an A4 oil pastel drawing that I did a few years back. Here's the drawing. I will post the painting when it's complete.

Here is my first drawing for 2026. It is pencil on A3, 300 gsm Arches Aquarelle paper. I hope you enjoy seeing this and wish all my followers a wonderful new year.

Another drawing

Pencil on A3, 300 gsm Fabriano paper completed over the past few days. I'm mostly indoors because the temperature outside affects my arthritis pain making walking difficult. Don't ask me what the drawing represents because I have no idea. It was done in five, two hour sittings.

Chinagraph drawings

This week I was investigating the potential and properties of Chinagraph ( Glasochrom) waxy, permanent pencils. I discovered that they enable a more painterly, textured and expressive surface to the works I drew over an acrylic ground. Using just black and white did create a sense of drama to the faces, which are invented, rather the depicting anyone in particular. The drawings are on 24 x 30 cm Magnani (Italy) 200 gsm paper.

Two Graphite drawings

After a short period of depression, due to complex situations, I've done two works on A4 cartridge paper. The first is five layers of graphite, the second ink and graphite. Excuse my brevity. I have nothing much to say at this time. As always the copyright remains with me Julie Joy Clarke 2022.

RECOMBINANT

 

 

 

Recombinant 2021. Acrylic paint on stretched canvas. This is my return to text based works I did in the first Melbourne lock down in 2020. I painted out one section of a painting I did in  2017 and combined it with new elements including the Astra Zeneca Monica of the CoViD vaccine made from Chimpanzee Adenovirus developed by Oxford University. You can see it in the background: ChAd0x1-S/nCov-19. The text includes all the letters, repeated to form the word MUTATION.

Art in Science, Science in Art Exhibition

Well, it's nearly ten years since I began this blog (on 9 August 2009) and am happy to report that my drawing below, which is graphite and ink on a water color wash, was shortlisted for the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery, Art in Science, Science in Art exhibition now showing at St. Vincent's Gallery, Daly Wing, St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. The exhibition runs until 30 August and contains some interesting responses to the theme. My work has already been sold but is still hanging if you are interested and are in the vicinity.

Paintings on wall of Art Cafe, Richmond

These seven acrylic paintings (two on hard board - top left and top right), one oil pastel (bottom left) and pencil drawing (bottom right) are also on the wall at the Art Cafe, 255 Bridge Road, Richmond (Open every day). They are all priced under $300.00. Great thing that is, unlike a gallery showing you do not have to wait to collect the work. You can take it off the wall and taken it home after purchase. Eftpost facilities are available. An artwork that you buy for $300, works out to be only $5.00 a week or a minuscule amount over your lifetime.

SUCCULENT FORMS 2015 AND 2017

Six (out of nine) paintings (four on left) and framed prismacolor drawings (two on right) (2015-2017) of mine entitled Succulent Forms are now displayed on the wall of the Art Cafe in Bridge Road, Richmond and are for sale - ranging from $100 to $350. Camberwell Art Trail: Julie Clarke Artworks

I have two works in the Camberwell Art Trail, funded by the Camberwell Chamber of Commerce. Artists were asked to respond to the business of the shop window where their work would be placed. I was allocated Our Place Melbourne and since the business involves workshops and conferences I worked with the notion of transformation and called these works Transhuman #1` and #2. This morning some of the artists met at Euphoria cafe and were treated to free coffee and cake and then we went off in search of artworks in the shops down Burke Road, Camberwell. There are some lovely works from amateurs and professional artists and you can see them on display for the remainder of the month of November, or you can join the Art Trail at Euphoria cafe this Saturday at 10 am and get a free cup of coffee to sip whilst walking up and down Burke Road. Colin Freckelton the curator and organizer will be playing his Ukulele.

Whilst all the facial drawings I've done this year were more concerned  with disrupting the face or depicting micro facial expressions, the one above, which I completed last week is actually based on a photograph I took of myself and is more realistic. It is commentary of sorts on the way in which identity is fragmented in cybernetic culture. The orb, a metaphor of rationality was taken from a small oil painting on Masonite I completed in 1991. I was interested in 18C illustrations of mathematical objects, the Enlightenment, machines, prosthesis, etc. Not a lot has changed.
