NIGHT SPORTS: PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS: JULIE CLARKE APRIL 2013

This is a new series of drawings and paintings based on a series of photographs I took of people playing various sports at night in the flood lit park near my place. The photographs reflect flow and movement; and the figures in the landscape become anonymous, obscure, abstracted or distorted. I begin each drawing or painting by looking at the photographs and allowing my imagination to take over. For want of a better title these will all be united by the words Night Sports.

  1. Well, thank you Steve! I've also had some great responses on Face book. I'm under strict instructions from my doctor to rest up (to help with vestibular migraine symptoms), so am spending more time making drawings and paintings - either mornings or afternoons. Today I purchased some Faber-Castell Aquarelle watercolor pencils, so the next work, which I've begun will look more watery. All the best, Julie

    Hi Julie,
I really love this series you did. I enjoy the linear feathery effect of the pencil and brush strokes and the fluid geometric shapes that make up your images, creating the illusion of movement. The omission of facial features on your figures removes some of the human element and allows them to merge or morph into the landscape.
Great drama and contrast through your use of dark shadows and dream like effect achieved through the blues greens and mustard colours are great. Most of landscape and figures look airy, floaty and dreamy, ideal, the magic of the experience of participating in group sports, as apposed to the rough and harshness experienced on the field. Julie are you going to show these works? I would love to see them. Cheers, Enza B.
