end of the world not

May 21 came and went, in the United States, and the rest of the world, without any sign of the apocalypse prophesied by the latest evangelist of doom, American Christian broadcaster Harold Camping.

It will be on May 21st that God will raise up all the dead that have ever died from their graves. Earthquakes will ravage the whole world as the earth will no longer conceal its dead (Isaiah 26:21). People who died as saved individuals will experience the resurrection of their bodies and immediately leave this world to forever be with the Lord. Those who died unsaved will be raised up as well, but only to have their lifeless bodies scattered about the face of all the earth. Death will be everywhere.

Despite warnings contained in the Christian Bible about false prophets, and passages like "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only" (Matthew 24:36) a long line of self-proclaimed prophets have claimed to have found "hidden" parts of the Bible which encode significant dates, such as the creation of the universe, and its end.

Camping told New York Magazine on May 11 that "When we get to May 21 on the calendar in any city or country in the world, and the clock says about – this is based on other verses in the Bible – when the clock says about 6 p.m., there's going to be this tremendous earthquake that's going to make the last earthquake in Japan seem like nothing in comparison. And the whole world will be alerted that Judgment Day has begun."

Camping further assured listeners of his Family Radio Network that the destruction of Earth would be complete by October 21 this year. Camping has previously asserted that the end would come in September 1994.

Some of Camping's disciples reportedly left their jobs and spent all the money they had. One elderly follower spent $US140,000 of savings paying for billboards spreading Camping's message about the end of the world. Hopefully Mr Camping will reimburse him from the millions of dollars donated to his Church each year in the USA.

Camping is reported to be "somewhat bewildered" that his prophecy failed to materialize.

It is perhaps less bewildering to see Government funding for Christian evangelizing to schoolchildren is controversial in Australia.

  1. Hey, we just lost a follower, must have been something we said?! (Ha!).
Erin and Laura and I were talking about end of world scenarios this weekend, but when you are as old as you and I Steve we've heard them all before. I believe the Atheist Association of Melbourne was having a bit of a piss-up on 21st in a pub near Brunswick.
I'm currently fighting a 38 degree temperature, difficult to get it down and I had to go out in the rain to purchase anti-histamines and tissues, which I'm sure hasn't helped. I'm crying out for sleep, having only had about four hours at the most. In regards to Christianity, well I guess people have to believe in something - even if that something is nothing.
Ah! what do I believe - well, I believe that the universe is vast and we are just tiny specks, almost insignificant from a distance, but because we are generally up close our actions and relationships take on meaning. Too sick to be too serious, just feel like making throw-away remarks.

  3. Thanks Steve. I've woken up quite sick this morning, had to cancel going in to Uni to tutor. I'm thinking this must be some nasty virus, because I have a lot of body pain, cough, temperature, however, the anti-histamine I bought yesterday has at least stopped the watery eyes and sneezing. I know I have to eat, but I have no appetite. I've got enough food, but it's nice for you to offer to assist me. I'm doing email messages and then going back to bed.

  4. In regards to the person being conned out of their life savings, there are often reports of this kind of thing happening - property deals etc - just horrible - and it is usually old folk who are targetted!
But really, I can't understand why people would be concerned about the end of the world (I assume they are talking about the Earth, or are they also talking about the planets) - how would it help to know the date of such an occurrence, does advanced warning enable sinner time to confess or atone for misdeeds? I think it's all hilarious, but can't laugh because I feel sick, nearly time to head back to bed.
