This afternoon I saw Leaving (French: Partir) (Catherine Corsini, 2009). Surprisingly enough the first five minutes reveals how this tale will end. The remainder of the film addresses the events that lead up to the event. Leaving is about an adulterous affair between a married woman, Suzanne (Kristin Scott Thomas) and a tradesman, Ivan (Sergi López) who has previously served a prison sentence. The film is passionate and intense and has quite a few sex scenes, but none as revealing as the film reviewers suggest. I have to say that I enjoyed the film even though I'd seen this tale many times before. Married women who have extra-marital affairs invariably get the short end of the stick (no innuendo intended!) ~ they usually loose their husband and their lover and suffer incredibly for their lustful desires. I think it's worth a look purely for the superb acting and if nothing else, to compare it with the Italian film I Am Love (Italian: Io sono l'amore), which has a similar theme. I was just slightly depressed after seeing this film ~ having experienced something similar myself, but brushed all those negative feelings aside with a long walk in the beautiful Melbourne sun.
