A few degrees higher than freezing...

Well, it's finally dawn. I've been awake and up since 5.30 am and it's still only 3.6 degrees in beautiful North Melbourne. Even the birds have been quiet. The first sounds I've heard from them this morning was at around 7.15 am. This is the time of the day that I love the most ~ to be alone and comfortable with yourself is such a precious thing. Anxiety about my health is beginning to dissolve into good thoughts about the upcoming weeks ~ the possibility of teaching again in second semester, new films to see, being social with people I haven't seen for a while. This year I'm entering two of the many photographs that I've taken over the past year in the Kodak Salon exhibition at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, which will open on the 29 July. I haven't shown any artwork since I participated in Cracks in the Pavement: Gifts in an Urban Landscape (Curated by Heather Johnson, Austin, Texas) in 2005.

My friend Leonie Cooper (Dr. now, if you don't mind) was absolutely crucial to me being able to complete my installation, for she photographed my artwork in five different locations around the city of Melbourne. My contribution to the project was a digitally manipulated portrait, set up to look like a 'missing person' poster with the words 'have you seen this girl?' See full explanation of my project at: http://www.cracksinthepavement.com/cracks05/html/statements/JulieClarkestatement.html
At that time I was suffering greatly from vertigo and as Leonie and I walked from Melbourne University to St. Paul's Cathedral, Southbank and then under the Degreaves Street underpass to Flinders Street station (locations where I placed my gifts) she held onto my backpack so that I would feel steady as I walked. What would we do without our friends? Vertigo is so debilitating! Thank goodness I haven't had a bout of that for a while. Anyway, this is what I'm thinking about on this crisp and cold Melbourne morning. I'm off soon to the Flag Raising ceremony at Melbourne Uni to celebrate NAIDOC week and then I'm picking up a double pass (which I won) from ACCA to see the film The Waiting City, which I'll see tomorrow morning. Will do a quick review about the film tomorrow afternoon or evening.
