I imagine that the European Masters: Städel Museum, 19th–20th Century, currently showing at NGV International will polarize audiences this Winter between those that love it and those that are underwhelmed by the experience. I fall into the latter category, which is not to say that there aren't some lovely paintings in the show. I admired a number of the works, but this one above by the German artist, Franz von Stuck (1863-1928) was the one that captured my attention. I was drawn to the expressive hands and the fact that both Mary and the Christ figure were exposed as extremely human in their obvious fragility.
