Synchronicity is an amazing phenomenon. I've been musing about soldiers and war over the past week and yesterday I was asked to tutor a student taking the Cinema Studies subject 'From Homer to Hollywood'. Part of the subject is to examine mythology and the manner in which traditional heroic themes are transposed in contemporary culture. I was taking a cursory look at reviews of war films, namely: Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and Hurt Locker. Suddenly, I was started by the sound of a helicopter passing over my apartment block ~ alerting me to the fragility of my psyche and my underlying anxiety. Isn't it interesting how perceptions of the now are colored by what's already in our thoughts? Perhaps we all have a battle raging inside us. The young woman I met whilst having coffee outside the Crown Casino yesterday was struggling with how to reconcile her current situation (no secure lodgings and no job prospects) with her future desire to be involved with film design, writing or acting. She was surprised that she met me since I appeared to represent many things that she wanted to achieve. Although I am delighted, I am no longer surprised by these meaningful coincidences. I inspired her, but she reminded me that the struggle is necessary.
