Costa understood that fashion (fabric, cut, style and drape) is about body modification. Coterie often comes to mind during the tedious process of conceptualizing robotic machines because in many ways designers are thinking about the same issues; morphology. ontology, phylogeny and excess, and are dealing with the same problem space that bodies inhabit.
And relocating and refiguring body parts is what fashionistas do best - longer/shorter limbs, moveable waists, resizable bums - all in six monthly cycles under the kind of scrutiny that artists rarely experience unless their work becomes controversial.
Great point Steve and yes, you are right, Costa would have been well aware of the kind of processes involved in the fashion industry - and the illusions therein. I know that as a designer of robotics you most certainly would have thought of aspects such as scale, excess, etc.
