Cuttlefish

I am absolutely in awe of Cuttlefish (Sepia), they are the most intelligent invertebrates. Their eyes are the most developed in the animal kingdom. They have three hearts, a large brain to body ratio, an ability to change their shape and color faster than a chameleon and can mesmerize their prey by creating an incredible pulsating light show all over their body. They are able to do this because their skin cells contain chromatophores, iridophores and leucophores that reflect light in different colours. When threatened, it squirts a black fog of ink onto its attacker, concealing it's escape. According to Dr James Wood, 'They have eyes and other senses that rival those of humans'. At the end of their lives, after creating such brilliant color and incredible morphological transmutations to distract their prey or to seduce a partner, the only thing left of their previous existence is the one thing that gave them buoyancy, an elongated off-white aragonite oval cuttlebone often washed up on the beach.
