Defiance 2026

I've titled this 'Defiance in the face of an onslaught'. The source material is a modified photo of a friend of mine from approximately 20 years ago, who would talk to me about science fiction films.

As usual these images are a reflection of fears surrounding AI and are a collaboration with the Nano Banana imaging generator.

Something's coming for us

I created this image from a photo of myself at the age of 26. It took quite a lot of instructions to achieve this outcome and the AI was more aligned than it was in previous attempts. The title is from a sentence in James Blake song This could be the end. By altering my photo I reveal a transformation from the past to the present and I was also responding to UK's call for people to stockpile food in case of future war or terror/cyber attacks and the recent, alarming news that an AI agent had hacked the data of an organisation.

Working title for AI images

I'm currently attempting to write a short rationale for these AI assisted images. The title at the moment is Future Past as each image addresses time in some way, particularly in regards to the fact that I have begun with a photograph of my face at different times in my life. Using AI has meant that I can bring the present and past together in a flow, in which time passes through us and dissolves the now. The following image I made yesterday exemplifies this.

Connection image

Yesterday I found a 10 x 12 inch acrylic on canvas board I painted about a decade ago. I photographed it and then, with the assistance of an AI image generator I made a new version. It's called 'Connection'.

Here is original painting and the new image. I should say it took a number of instructions to create this.l new version, which speaks of Medusa and our connectivity to all things, including the long tentacles of technology.

Protection AI image

I've nearly finished reading the most wonderful novel by Irish writer Doireann Ni Ghriofa called Said the Dead about a woman's investigations into a 18th century asylum. I was thinking about our recent pandemic and the affect on many people's state of mind and how we furnish ourselves with objects that console us. A teddy bear features in some of my art as a symbol of comfort but also marking a major shift in my life. This is the image I made after giving instructions to an AI. It began with a photo of me when I was 22 years old.

Red back spiders

I may have gone a little overboard with the amount of wrinkles placed on this face, which began with a photograph of me at 26 years old. Otherwise I'm happy that the AI executed my instructions very well. As always - my idea, my requests, carried out by an AI tool.

Scenes from my play

My recent foray into Nano Banana - a multi algorithms array, lead me to give it precise instructions and descriptions of various scenes in the play that I wrote in 2024. I chose Cinematic as the style because it allowed me to set scenes with a 1950s aesthetic. Please note that the play is simultaneously unpublished and unstaged, however in a way I have been able to present it as though it has been parti

ally staged through this virtual medium. I learnt through the process that I often had to correct what the AI provided to me until I achieved the scene that I envisaged in my mind whilst writing the play.  Here are some of the scenes.

More AI assisted images

It's convenient for me to utilize my own face rather than appropriate that of another. Here are latest images I've created using Nani Banana AI with the baseline being photographs of me at different times in my life.

Rrose Selavy

This morning I made (AI assisted) a work in response to Duchamp's Rrose Selavy. I began with that Photobooth photo of me when I was 15 and instructed the AI to make various changes to it. Here is Duchamp's work and my AI image.

Backrooms a disaster!

I've just suffered through the absolute slow, torture of the 2026 film Backrooms. The first ten minutes graced with an unseen person running through large, empty, depressing yellow spaces, quick jump cuts and sudden sounds played on my nervous system and the hand held camera work made me borderline nauseas. Save yourself, I say from the predictability of the premise, the borrowed sci-fi reliance of the unseen monster, always more frightening than the actual alien itself. I walked out on this film, which was repetitive in its imagery and psychological ideas. So much hype, so much nothingness.

Sculpture of Julie Clarke

Marble sculpture of me displayed in a museum in 2014 based on a self-portrait I took in 2010 in a retail shop in Melbourne.

Sifting through the past artworks

I have about 200 artworks and am slowly getting rid of the ones that I don't want to hold onto - mainly paintings, as I think my drawings are worth keeping. Here's one I will be holding onto as it's 32 years old. It's a polaroid self-portrait printed on A2 French printmaking paper that I made in 1995. I did a series of Polaroids and I look different in each one. I called this one Japanese Me because it reminded me of a Japanese postcard that I'd seen. All came under the title of Book ot the Other. I feel like I should do this clean out in order to know which direction I take in the future. So, art is on hold for me whilst I sort through past work.
