After negotiating the absolutely chaotic space that is Southern Cross Station, I caught the 9.16 am train to Ballarat yesterday. I planned to see the Clarice Beckett paintings in conjunction with others in the Max Meldrum tonal painters exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, which I did. Of course, I saw much more, but I was satisfied by her beautiful, small, misty, enigmatic works.
My other aim was to take photographs of Mount Buninyong, an extinct volcano and the highest of the forty-five mountains that surround Ballarat. That mountain speaks to me in a very spiritual way.
I walked towards the mountain, but the closer I got city buildings obscured my view so I crossed the main street and walked to a higher spot. Here is the photograph I took. I plan to follow Becket and do a small series of drawings or water color works of the mountain. I'll keep you posted.
A note. I travelled on the Velocity train that travels at 160 km per hour, but not all the time. I took the following short video on my trip back to Melbourne, which shows it slowing down as it passes grazing sheep.
