That bottleneck that is the intersection of Swanston and Flinders Street Melbourne was a perfect example of a swarm yesterday. People heading towards Federation Square or Flinders Street station. Those going the other way towards Young and Jacksons, St Paul's Cathedral and retail stores.
I made my way through the dense crowd to the tram stop but was advised that due to the protest no trams would be running down Swanston so I navigated the intersection again and walked toward Elizabeth Street tram. All the trams were packed, but I managed to get a ride up to the market and walk four long blocks up to the Science Gallery.
I spoke with Stelarc for about twenty minutes before he set up his video recorder to document the experimental music performance inspired by the hissing sounds of the Anthropmorphic Machine. Composed by James Hullick and JOLT ensemble.
So, I settled down in a chair and against a backdrop of trams finally running down Swanston Street (they could be seen through the large windows) the performers blew their wind instruments and the inter-meshed construct swayed in a very subtle way like soft wind through leaves.
I didn't stay for the hour, however I enjoyed what I heard.
