I can't lavish enough praise for the women and men of our fire, ambulance and police services for their speed, skill and agility in putting out the fire in one house and the adjoining houses in Highett Street, Richmond this afternoon. I went rushing out when I heard all the sirens ~I must admit I thought a war had started. Many people in our street were watching the action and it's cathartic because when you see all those capable people in action you know everything is going to be alright and it was because they rescued the people inside. Apart from the drama of seeing smoke billowing above us, for me the most dramatic action was when the fire officer disconnected the electrical wires from the three buildings causing an amazing amount of steam to be exuded. Anyway, here are some of the photographs I took, including one taken at 5.30 pm whilst they were still cleaning up. It's nearly 6pm and dark, but they are still hard at work. This has got to be a reminder to everyone to install Smoke Alarms and keep them maintained! Latest news (found this out on Sunday) is that a woman has been arrested for setting a fire in the house, which spread to another property and has caused $800,000 damage. See this link.
I received a comment from an anonymous person asking if I took a photo of the man who rescued the woman from the house. Unfortunately I didn't. I only saw her on a stretcher prior to being placed in the ambulance.
